What can you do for my company?
It depends on what you need. I write copy and scripts for your marketing, training, corporate
and sales materials. And with years of experience helping companies market their products
and services, I can also offer counsel on how to increase your response, build sales and most
effectively connect with your prospects.
For many clients, I provide the copy or script, and they arrange for others to take care of
typesetting, design, layout, printing or video production.
However, I have a number of associates who can provide excellent design, web design, printing
and video production services.
Do you charge for consulting?
In the course of providing you with copy, I'll often provide advice and suggestions as part of
the job -- no extra charge. However, you may also find that you're not yet ready to produce
anything, but you'd like to sit down and formulate a plan. I can help you identify your unique
selling proposition, your market, and the most effective means of reaching them. I'll provide a
quotation for this work.
Do you specialize in any areas?
Most of my work involves selling products to business; the rest is consumer marketing, training and editorial copy. I've written many direct mail packages for business publications and seminars, sales materials for financial products, a number of newsletters for the telecommunications industry, and how-to website content for lumber dealers and hardware stores.
But the skills I've developed here apply to any product or service.
Many clients tell me that because I'm able to quickly learn about a product and cut to the core of a problem, I can provide an effective approach that someone very close to the subject might miss.
You'll also find that I can simplify complex ideas and product features, to provide persuasive, easily understood copy. In the past, I've explained the complexities of asset allocation investing to both managers and clients... translated the highly technical language of computer animation into readable copy for an international newsletter... simplified the legalese of the Insurance Act to make it clear to brokers and agents... and explained fiber optics and broadband cable technology to property managers.
What steps do you take to ensure my materials are effective?
You may have a clear idea of what you need, or you may be looking at a number of alternatives. In either case, we'll discuss your objectives and ideas. I'll ask a lot of questions. At this point, my chief concerns are to determine who your market is, what unique benefits you can offer, what method will best achieve a good response... and if it's our first discussion, to get to know you.
The answers and materials you provide are often enough to get started, and if need be, I can
augment this with brief conversations with clients or others in your company. I'll confirm my
understanding of your needs by talking to you or providing a breakdown of key points to be
included.
You may find that I suggest a route different from that which you've considered. For example, a roofing materials manufacturer wanted to sell both dealers and consumers on a product, but could only afford a single brochure. I suggested that, rather than watering down the message by directing it at both, we focus the brochure entirely on the end-user (the consumer). Then, we could include an inexpensive cover letter to dealers. Potential dealers would quickly see how good the product was, and would inquire in response to the letter.
You're in Meaford. Where the heck is that?
We're on the south shore of Georgian Bay, about two scenic hours from Toronto, and if you’ve never been in the area, plan to at some point. You’re in for a treat.
I find I can effectively interview and discuss projects via phone, fax and email. You can reach me toll-free from anywhere in North America. I've worked successfully with many U.S. clients, including bigdough.com in Bethesda, MD.
How long will you need to complete the job?
On most projects, a couple weeks is ideal, and allows time to properly research and refine the copy, so you get the best possible product. But deadlines have a way of sneaking up on us. If you need something faster, let me know. I'll have the work on your desk by the day we've agreed, or sooner.
How do you deliver copy?
I can fax, email, or send you a disk of the copy. I work on a PC and can provide the project in the format you prefer.
What if I want you to make changes?
No problem... and no charge. My guarantee of satisfaction means you must be completely happy with the copy before I consider it completed. I find most clients request few changes, but if you're not 100% satisfied, I'll make any changes at my expense.
How do you charge?
My fee schedule gives you a rough idea of what a job will cost. And I'll provide a written quotation once we've discussed the assignment in detail. You'll note these are flat rates, not hourly. This means you know the absolute final cost -- not a mere estimate -- of a job before we begin.
Hope this helps. I’m looking forward to working with you.
